A Native Moon Garden is one that is designed to attract nocturnal moths and insects and is intended to be enjoyed by the light of the moon. The species in this type of garden often have silvery, white or pale flowers and foliage and sometimes offer a nighttime scent that is attractive to Moths.
Traditional Moon gardens choose to focus on species that are pleasing to the Human senses while providing very little to no value for the native fauna. When you use Native plants in your moon garden, you are selecting species that are not only visually pleasing in the daylight, but are also infinitely more interesting in the moonlight because of the fluttering nocturnal visitors.
We were first introduced to the idea of planting a Native Moon Garden from our good friends Jim McCormac and Chelsea Gottfried. Their recent book "Gardening for Moths" is a definite must-have for all Native plant and Lepidoptera enthusiast.
